Charcoal Grill

Private Client - National City, CA

MudWorks Natural Building designed and built this charcoal grill out of masonry and earthen materials. It features a clay sculptural element, shaped with straw and soil from on-site. The finish plaster highlights the local soil as well as a lovely red clay.

Project Details & Specs

This grill was built onto a defunct outdoor sink. A 24x24in cement paver was placed atop the sink. Before laying the firebrick hearth, a roll of ceramic fiber insulation was added to prevent heat loss, followed by a layer of sheet metal to stabilize the hearth bricks. The rest of the oven was built using standard red bricks, cut to size with a wet saw where necessary. The mortar is one part Lincoln fire clay to two parts sifted sand.

The exterior features an earthen sculptural component. “Cob” material was mixed by hand using clay soil from the backyard, straw for fiber, and a bit of added sand for compressive strength. This is a great addition to any backyard gathering space!
