The Honeycomb Home
Passion Project - Escondido, CA
The Honeycomb Home is a hexagonal (six-sided) dwelling, built by friends and volunteers on the weekends. MudWorks Natural Building designed and led this collaborative project, and it served as an art studio for someone who lived on the land. By using reclaimed pallets and windows, straw insulation, and plaster with local soil, materials costs were kept very low. It features an earthen floor, living roof, skylight, and plentiful windows for natural light.

Project Details & Specs
The Honeycomb Home was built with reclaimed wooden shipping pallets as the wall system. They were filled with straw for insulation and covered with clay plaster using soil from the project site. The roof showcases a unique spiraling design, culminating in a central hexagonal skylight.
The living roof allows for wildflowers and local grasses to grow. This adds insulation to the building, as well as evaporative cooling from the plants in the hotter months.
